Many Indigenous artists and storytellers use the tricksters Coyote and Raven to explain how their societies work and why problems arise. These tricksters point out absurdities and frustrations and question the ways in which we address them within our communities and ourselves—sometimes creating chaos; other times, bringing light into the world.
In this exhibit, the tricksters serve as guides, presenting artworks and perspectives of contemporary Indigenous artists as they, themselves, process issues within Indigenous communities and broader American society. These artists have chosen to use animals to reveal truths, pose questions, and provoke reflection. The artworks, reflecting deeply personal commentaries about the world, ask us to consider different ways of looking at pressing issues.
