Since their invention over 20,000 years ago, ceramics have been used around the world for a wide range of purposes. As one of the most common artifacts found on archaeological sites, pottery is an important tool for archaeologists to create chronologies, document interconnections between different peoples, identify what activities were carried out at particular sites, study the organization of production in society, and more. This master class will discuss the development of pottery on each continent, highlighting both the mundane and unusual aspects of its many uses by both its creators and the scientists who study it.
