At the September 27th 2017 meeting of the ABOR Business and Finance Committee, the ASM Rate and Fee Structure agenda item was tabled for further discussion. As part of the ABOR adoption process, ABOR representatives met with University of Arizona leadership to discuss constituent concerns and options prior to Committee action. The major concerns were: (a) the in-perpetuity curation costs, and (b) the need to respond to requests for formal tribal consultation.
After hearing the concerns and evaluating alternatives, and because there is remaining storage capacity within the university space currently assigned to ASM, the University of Arizona will continue to support the space allocations costs (based on UA’s RCM budget model) associated with the in-perpetuity curation of artifacts and documents until this current storage capacity is exhausted. This results in the reduction of the total in-perpetuity curation costs to $613/half box for artifacts and $66.50/inch for documents (a reduction of 59% and 69%, respectively).
UA Assistant Vice President for Tribal Relations Karen Francis-Begay, ABOR General Counsel Nancy Tribbensee, and ASM Director Patrick Lyons will work together to develop protocols for formal tribal consultation related to the impact of the proposed fee structure on ASM’s role as a steward of native heritage.
We wish to notify you that the ASM Rate and Fee Structure is now scheduled for review at the November 2nd 2017 ABOR Business and Finance Committee meeting. The formal executive summary submitted to this Committee is available here. While there is no public call to the audience during Committee meetings, you are welcome to contact ABOR Business and Finance Committee Chair Ron Shoopman with your comments or to provide your input at the call to the audience at the November 16th, 2017 Board meeting. Please see the ABOR website for more information.
